Aggressive Door-to-Door Sales: National Water Heater Scam

Last night after dinner, there was a knock on our door... great, salespeople. Two young guys. One introduced himself, and said the other was a trainee. He said they were from National Home Services, and were in the neighbourhood replacing outdated rented water heaters.

We had someone similar at our door a few weeks ago, but I can't remember the company. After that encounter, I looked online and decided that I was happy with our current arrangement with Reliance Home Comfort.

That's what I said to the two guys from National... "Thanks for coming by, but we will decline."

Apparently, that wasn't sufficient to send them away. As I was closing the door, he kept talking, "But we're a Canadian company..."  I re-opened the storm door and said, "Do you even know who we rent our water heater from?"  To which he answered, "It's either Reliance or [some other company that I can't remember>]."  I retorted with, "See, you don't even know what we have. Thanks for your visit, but we will decline."

As I proceeded to close the door again, he had a stern facial expression and maintained eye contact with me. Think about it. That's highly unusual, and struck me as aggressive. At this point, I experienced a twinge of fear that these guys could possibly go beyond a sales call, and get nasty... I pictured them vandalizing my property or harassing my family.

I opened the storm door again and said, "OK, I don't want to be rude. I told you we're not interested. Thank you, and good luck."

I finally closed the door.

Try googling "national water heater". Most of the hits are warnings about scams.

  1. Thanks for posting your experience. About 10 minutes ago, 2 guys from National Home Services came to our door. I was preoccupied with something, so I just listened and was under the impression that they were with Reliance Home Comfort or associated with them. One just watched and listened, the other gave what I consider to be a very aggressive sales pith and very deceptive. He said they're performing a 'free' upgrade to the water heaters in our neighborhood. Immediately I assumed this was a free upgrade from the same company we use. I could tell he just wanted to come on in and start the ball rolling.

Needless to say, I ended up taking a brochure which just bashed Reliance Home Comfort and touted how great National was. After closing the door and letting his conversation sink in, I am now going to email National Home Services and BBB or somebody and let them know how deceptive they are. In fact, I am tempted to contact the local newspaper and/or radio.

Can you imagine a 90+ something year old answering the door and just signing up, under the impression they were nice guys working in affiliation with your existing water heater provider?

    1. When you first got your hot water tank from reliance did you not get a knock on your door. Door to door sales is a normal way of doing business in this industry. Before posting this stuff why don't you do you home work. Reliance is in court with the Ontario Province Goverment. Do you not belive in competition. 250,000 people can't be wrong about this company. i received what i was told. perhapes some people want to give another supplier a chance who will come in and service there equipment because relience has not. Why did you rent from Reliance if you have to service their tanks. why don't you check the truth before slandering any company.

    2. Reliance DOES NOT go door to door. The even go to great lengths to make people aware of this. So where do you get your information from that the person you responded to rented through a door to door salesperson? Did you truly do YOUR homework? If they are actually in court from something serious, can you please post direct links to this information? A lot of companies are in court from time to time for a variety of reasons. Can you please enlighten us as to why they are apparently before the courts and what the specific reason the province has initiated proceedings? Did they, or did Reliance initiate something against the Government? Before you continue to post hearsay please be prepared to back it up.

You sound like someone who works for National and yes, they do use shady tactics as I have had them at my door numerous times. They even say they NEED to see my bill. If they were on the up and up as you claim, they would employ more honest methods.

    3. And now, given the back lash that has been quite apparent for many months, National Home Services are using their parent company, Just Energy Income Fund, aka Just Energy, to complete their marketing telephone calls now using very similar pressure tactics - talking about dated equipment and charging $2 more per month but promise a $100 rebate from the government to cover the added monthly costs, and stating I must make an appointment immediately over the phone but can change it if I like by calling 877-673-5373, but I can't call the same number to book an appointment.

I did not get a chance to ask about their Contract terms, longevity or if there are penalty clauses. I said I had to check my calendar before I made an appointment; I was told they would call me back... Gee - I can hardly wait!

      Waiting with great anticipation...

    4. I have been getting several phone calls per day for a couple of weeks now from this company-I check the caller display and don't answer. SHOCKINGLY, they don't leave a message. I finally decided to answer. A man very aggressively tried to get me to make an appointment to have my water heater replaced. I told him to call me next week so I could check my schedule, and my husband's. I wanted time to research this company. Anyway, his tone of voice immediately changed. He kept pushing me to make an appointment. I told him to call me next week...lets see if the daily phone calls continue....

    5. I just had a National rep at my door tell me that he was here to replace a part in my hot water heater and he showed me a hand written list of "my neighbours" who had had it done and pictures of the part that had to be replaced. He even told me to lock my dog up so that he could come in. I asked why Reliance hadn't let me know about this and he said it was because they were doing the work not Reliance. Needless to say he did not get past the door. A company that outright lies to you to get your business is not worth dealing with.

  2. I JUST had the same thing happen and one of the young men actually said "so should I take my shoes off and come in". They were very aggressive and I immediately called reliance after. I was actually started to fear these young men at my door. So glad to see others have had this too. Shame on them for going after those who are ignorant. Sad.

  4. I was visiting friends when a knock came on the door. A tall young man wearing an official looking shirt with the name of the company on it proceeded to state he was sent to look at the water heater. He had a female companion with a clipboard outside. He referred to the notice my friends "got in the mail about the Ontario incentive to update water heaters". They could not remember such a notice (and in fact this was part of his phony sales pitch). As my friends questioned him he began to step inside the house. He said "would you like me to take off my shoes" and he proceeded to move further into the house. My friends were still trying to figure out who he was representing but as he crossed over the threshold into the living room I piped up and said "stop right there. I think you better leave because this is a scam". The guy got very upset and aggressive towards me but he did leave after saying his peace. I knew instantly this was a scam and his tactics were very, very pushy. I wish I had called the police!

This company is debt free and fastly growing, and I checked with my friends and they have there eqipment get a life and leave people who are trying to help the inviroment do there job.

  5. I had the same kind of encounter today in Ottawa with 2 "representatives" of a company I cannot remember.I just remember they were male and female wearing black short sleeves shirts. They showed me an Enbridge bill telling me that they are aware, according to there papers, that I was renting a water heater and that I should make sure that it is an upgraded Energy Star water heater. The man was really insisting on coming inside my home to inspect it. I told him I wasn't interested in having him inside my home and that anyway, I was not renting a water heater. I became annoyed and told me that NO I was wrong and I was renting a water heater since it was written on his paper. I was quite confused and didn't appreciate the fact that he was insisting so much. The tone of his voice changed and I felt as if he was harassing me. I was finally able to get rid of them but I had to repeat many times that I was not going to let him in and I was absolutely not interested in whatever he was talking to me about. I wrote a report to Enbridge, asking them if they had people using their name and bills to approach consumers but it is the week-end and I won't get any answers for the next few days.

I feel insecure in my own home at the moment. I don't know what was the intention of those people. I double locked my doors. I almost called the police.

  6. Hi,
I live in Stittsville on Carp Road and was just visited by two people from National ?? telling me they were here to inspect my water heater and upgrade my water heater free of charge. I told them I wasn't interested since there was probably a new service contract associated with it. He indicated that wasn't the case and mentioned something about Enbridge looking after it. I asked him why Enbridge was involved since I don't use them. Ya, they are agressive. I'm glad they're gone. As a rule I'll look after my own service needs rather than get conned into someone offering something.

  7. I was jus hit with a full pressurized in your face sales pitch. As I told him and his nice looking and very quiet female companion that I am not interested, he kept talking and ignored every objection I threw at him. Jerk finally gave up and left. Terrible company and scam. Stay away!!

  8. I just received a visit from a 'representative' myself and to say he was aggressive would be an understatement. He told me that I was lying about my heater, that he had to check for 'safety' issues and that my heater was likely leaking deadly carbon monoxide (something that's obviously not happening with my new heater) but I didn't appreciate the tactic at all. I politely declined and he gave me the stern look you all are describing. I'm not impressed at all.

  9. This evening I had a young lady come to the door with the same sales pitch: "We're authorized by your company to upgrade your water heater". When I told her I wasn't interested, she looked me in the eye and said "Excuse me? You don't have a choice." I told her it's my house, I have lots of choices, and I choose no. But if it will make you feel better, come back in an hour, I'm going to go call my company and if they agree with what you are saying, then we'll talk. I called my supplier, and as I suspected, they do not authorize any company to represent them and they NEVER go door to door. It's bad business.
2 hours has passed and no sign of her yet. I wonder why.

When I told him the second time that I was not interested his eyes went up and look dumb founded. I guess they don`t tell the representatives in training that what they are trying to sell is a scam and to expect the word NO at the door.

  11. These scam artists are doing the rounds in Kanata/Stittsville right now - telling people they are getting an upgrade, when in fact they are switching you over to a difference company with a huge price increase - I just told one punk he was working for a scam, rip-off company and he leaned in and got aggressive. A few choice swear words and 5 seconds later he was chased off my property. Do not give these scam artists the time of day, slam the door shut when you see them, or if you want a little fun, get aggressive back and walk them back to the street - he was 2 seconds away from getting his clipboard across the back of his head.

With all the commotion from Direct Energy lately I thought that is was okay to let him in. After confirming that he said my tank was due for a replacement. He then came upstairs and asked to be seated than started to writh up a contract. At this point I realized he was a con and proceed to let he know that I was not interested. HE GOT VERY ANGRY AND STARTED TO RIPE THE CONTRACT UP. AS HE WALKED OUT OF MY HOUSE HE SLAMMED MY DOORS INTO MY FACE. HIS NAME WAS SHAUN COOK.

  17. Hello, fisrt of all Renting Water Heaters In Ontario It's total scam.
Yup - SCAM.It's that simple.I bought my tank many years ago. Renting is a total scam, but people who buy new builds just take the easiest route. The builders don't want to pay for a HWH, so they have an agreement with the gas companies to place rental units in new builds.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yup, the entire hot water tank rental industry is based on B.S. Just go to Home Depot, Lowe's, Rona, Home Hardware, Sears, etc, etc, etc,,,, and buy your own HWH. It is not expensive, and these HWHs are generally very reliable. These retailers will set up the installation of your OWN HWH for a reasonable fee. Some retailers offer a very reasonable extended warranty option. Then once installed, you can call up your rental company to take away their "cash cow".

  18. they are currently doing the rounds in Markham. Three sales people with the same story - needed to come into the house to look at water heater, didnt get passed the door. Claimed that Enbridge/Direct Energy had contracted them to replace the water heater (they in fact hadnt) - the small print apparently holds a contract for 15 years, and that one is responsible should you sell your home to inform the new owner that they are responsible for the remainder of the lease. They are more expensive than Direct Energy and will not give out any information until you sign their contract. WHAT A SCAM, should be stopped, dont sign anything at the front door, and dont be intimidated. Call police if they continue to harrass.

  20. Kitchener now too! Did not find him pushy or aggressive though. I asked him a number of questions, said he was affiliated with Union Gas & kitchener Utilities & replacing older tanks with glass lined ones if they are over five yrs. old. That Kitchener would pick-up the old one. I was sceptical but did let him check the date of my rental unit. He said it was fine only 4 yrs. old & we don`t qualify for the upgrade! Wierd, maybe I scared him off with all my questions.I also called Kitchener Utilities(which I was going to do if they guy said I did qualify) & they verified the SCAM. Told me it was mentioned on the news & flyers they have sent out, though I have not seen anything about this myself.

  21. I just had a visit from 2 reps from this company. I live in Breslau (next to Kitchener). They claimed they were from my water rental company and had been 'contracted' to perform a review of my heater. I told them:

    1. I need to telephone call from RELIANCE before I let anyone into my house.

    2. Until then, I am not interested and I would appreciate it if they left.

As I said point #2, I started closing the door .. the guy actually took 3 very quick steps forward and had his hand out as if he was going to stop me from closing the door. Adrenaline kicked in (our neigbourhood has been hit by thieves recently) and I quickly stepped outside and closed the door behind me.

I told him in no uncertain terms he was to leave my property this instance. The girl then interjected and said, "Why aren't you letting us do our job??" in a real combative manner.

This was unreal - I've never had this level of pushy sales before and, I don't know if it was the adrenaline, but I suddenly felt in danger. I pointed at the street and said, "Turn the f*** around and get off my property".

They both walked away but as they got to the curb, he turned around and said, "you don't know me, I know where you live".

That was the last straw, I went inside, got my phone and called 911. I opened the garage door and gave a description to the dispatcher. When they saw I was on phone, they quickly made off.

5 mins later, a cruiser drives past and 10 mins later, a larger police SUV stops by. The police officer came over and said the reps had been stopped and asked what they were doing. Apparently, the police have received many complaints about aggressive behaviour from folks in our area. She said the police were looking to see if they can revoke their permit and that they have no business being so pushy and aggressive.

She also said I shouldn't have stepped outside as it could have escalated, but understood the heat of the moment etc.

She said there were 4 groups of 2 going around in our area and that they had been asked to leave so we shouldn't see them again. When I mentioned the "I know where you live" part, she got very concerned. She wrote something down in the notepad and said she will ask him exactly what he meant by that.

My advise is this; if they knock on you door, politely and firmly ask them to leave. If they do not, call the police. Do not give them a second chance and follow through with the phone call to 911. If the police receive enough complaints, they will have a much stronger case to have their permit revoked. And, always be safe. Matching their aggression was a mistake on my part - call the cops and let the professionals handle it

  22. Appears they are moving further West, as 2 sales reps from National were at my door in London just now. As many others here have noted, they just had to come in to check the serial number on the tank! MMmm, no! Same story too, with second guy in training. 2. You keep mentioning going green...to what do you suggest?
This is the same false statement made by National Home Services when they are in neighbourhoods preying on the uninformed. They claim that they are replacing appliances with "more efficient models". This is simply not true. Replacing a category 1 appliance with a category 3 appliance is not going green. Both appliances have a maximum efficiency of 83%.
These tactics of any door to door salesperson should be met with stern rejection. Especially when they do not reveal openly that they are obligating their customers to a contract exceeding a decade of rental charges. By no means is this a "free" service.

Mr. "Anonymous", it would seem obvious that you are either uninformed or an owner/investor/employee of National. That said, perhaps you would like to enlighten the readers that National's subcontractors are required to have a signed contract fulfilled within 24 hours in order to ensure the "clients" cannot easily back out of their contract.

Green is the colour of money...yes...you or your National coharts are intending to achieve this...just not with transparency.

He said they had been contracted from the company I rent from to upgrade my water heater. I told him that he wasn't going to do anything until I heard from my company directly he said they don't do that because they are such a well respected company.

This time he showed up in the middle of the day. Alone again. I told him I remember him from the last time he was here and he still was not coming in. This time he knew I was with Reliance but I still told him no a few too many times. He kept talking and raising his voice every time I started to close the door. Finally he gave up and walked away after I locked the door.

I think next time I'll just tell him to leave before the cops show up. The station is just down the road.

  24. Had a young guy come to the door tonight and Said he was from the National Home Services and quickly went on about how his technicians are working our street this week and he wants to check our serial number on our water heater to see if we qualify for the free upgrade. As he was quickly saying his speal he tried to walk into my house! I quickly closed the door more and said sorry but I don't just let anyone walk into my house. He said well I have to check the serial number to see if you qualify for the free upgrade and again tried to walk in! In the end he would not give me any brochures to even read over and contact them if I want too on my time... he told me he was about to give me one but he has to fill out the form with my info to get me on the list to get the free upgrade while the technicians are in the area. I again asked for some brochure or paper and when he said no again, I new something was up, he then tried to use the "just trying to get you on the list to also get the 100 dollar rebate" So now I guess they say anything to get your info for there system.

Needles to say I had to close the door on him.

After reading the above comments I found a lot of similar things, aggressive to say the least! The fact he tried to walk into my house and just thought he could go to check things out created a huge flag for me. I am extremely glad I didn't and after looking into it when he left and finding all these comments I am even more sure now I did the right thing.

Seriously if I want to change to a different water heater or change to the one he was talking about I would contact the company I am with and use theres!

Don't just sign up and give your info to someone at your door, contact the companies directly when you feel its right, they try to use the confusion and the "just do it and get them out" technique to screw people over. Things like that should never be a 5 min decision brought on in the middle of dinner cause someone knocks on your door.

Did not appreciate that feeling of vulnerability. I never sign or buy anything like that, door-to-door.
Also, a few months ago, something similar happened. Big man, wearing a hoodie!, starts banging on my door. I didn't bother even opening it. Later, as I was walking my dogs, I saw him, and gave an earful. I told him that he was scary looking, unprofessional with his apparel, and don't EVER come banging on my door! My 80yr old father was pushed into signing some papers from a very persuasive salesperson from National. My father mentioned it to me and said he did not feel comfortable with the event specialy since after telling the salesperson that he did not fully understand what he was signing (he does not speak well english) before any instalation was done and just a few days after the signing, I was able to call claiming I was him and that I no longer wanted their services and wanted to cancel the order, that I was invoking my rights under the consumer protection act and that I have 10 days to cancel an agreement signed at a door. I was given no hassle and told the order was canced.

Again thank you for giving me the knowledge to deal with this!

  29. It's never too late, especially since you haven't paid anything. Maybe you should contact the Better Business Bureau. Let us know how things play out; I think your experience here could be valuable to post.

    Best of luck!

For what it's worth, I let them into my house to check out the water heater. Though I didn't sign anything.

    1. I let a guy named Zack from ontario consumers inc. in today to check our water heater. He said he was here on behalf of enbridge to check if our water heater was energy star. I hesitantly let him into the basement. He saw that we had a tank less water heater, asked how old is the house . I replied a year, he then started talking about some chlorophyll cleaner.. i told him I have to talk to my husband about it and I am not sure and let him out. I feel stupid for letting him, as I checked online and read about all scams going on. I did not see him writing anything down, or selling me anything, or me signing anything to him. I hope I will be okay..

  31. I also had two men knock on my door two nights ago. One was in uniform with a name tag (NATIONAL) and the other was in plain clothing just leaning casually against the brick wall. The one in uniform asked for the home owner. He then said that they were there to do a free upgrade to the water heater. I told the individual that I was not with National. He paused and replied that they were performing this upgrade to the whole sub division. I knew that this was a scam so I told the individual that I never received notice of any upgrade. He replied he wouldn't be there otherwise and proceeded to get closer towards entering my home. I told the man I would have to confirm this with my provider and began to get agitated. He continued to inch his way towards entering my home which made me very uncomfortable (starting to think the worst). Again I told the man I would have to confirm with my provider and with an angry look to his face they finally left. BE AWARE, THEY ARE VERY AGGRESSIVE AND INTIMIDATING TO THE POINT IT SEEMS THEY WILL GET VIOLENT.

First its not a scam yeah the door door guys might say some dumb ass things that make me laugh but really has anyone really went pass the stage into taking about there program or even give some1 nice a chance if there dicks at the doors then yeah fuck them but.. LOL try this get the person fill out the app(water heater app btw it wont put you into a 15 year contract just booked your apmt to install and fill the paper work).. if they say there from D.e or relience Don't sign anything just tell him complet the app and call. NSH rep on the phone will tell that they are no apart of any of those companys etc blah blah..(btw ask all info you missheard or anything on your mind they people on the phone wont lie belive me they give you all the info needed about anything) and then report him that he gave u wrong info and the guy would be fried belive me.. and dont be scared since there info is already spread around the street (note take notice to people who you talk to at your door get to know there name and i.d)and what worst they rage out just tell them to leave and call the cops For trespassing then or for a lighter way solve this finsh with the stuff and cancel right when that dumbass leaves the door LOL+ other side not alot people know that if you have a 15+ year old water heater and that shit damages your basement no1 is willing to cover your costs.. really ask your water heater company or even your own home coverage it be all out of your poket yeah people might say hey you be spending 1000+ on rental but hey you know you cna buy the rental off your water heater company atfer 5 years + of the day it was put in. and the cost of a price that they would agree on example 10 years pass got the water heater the less you pay to buy it out... but back to topic Did you know nsh offers glass line units that prevent the build up of gross ass shit on the bottom of tanks that just dont get looked atfer. When the last time you even drain the shit LOL... if you do then good for you but people who just put a blind eye to is shame on you.. only reason they go door to door is cuz people dont want hear those dam phonecalls saying hey you upgrade to a free asshole... Lol real shit people unless they have there clipbord and i.d saying there Nhs (note you can take there name and i.d number off them) just ask dont be scared that just show anybody can push you around... just stand your ground listen to what they say and if there anything fishy that you dont understand ASK THE REHAFF PEOPLE THE PEOPLE WHO WILL ALWAYS TELL YOU THE CATCH EVEN IF THE SALES GUY LOOSES THE DEAL come on read this and pass the message

  33. I'm glad I found this blog. A guy from the National Home Services came to my door two hours ago. He said he was authorized to come in to my house to check my water heater. It's a good thing that my Rottweiler was standing right next to me. He didn't get to come in. However, I wasn't smart enough to disbelieve the rest of the things he said. I signed up for the rental. As soon as I read the experiences you posted here, I called the National Home Services to cancel the installation appointment. Thank you all so very much for sharing your experiences.

    1. They are now in Peterborough. The guy from National who came to my door wearing a badge & holding a clipboard wasn't very articulate. He could not explain why he was at my house other than "upgrading rental water heaters in my neighborhood for Peterborough Utilities". I got frustrated & asked him why he was telling me this since I don't rent my water heater. He said they are just letting people know & asked why I was getting mad. I said because I am sick of companies like his showing up unsolicited trying to sell stuff. He claims that's not what he was doing, I told him the conversation was over & proceeded to close the door. As he was walking across my yard, I opened the door & asked if he could give me his business card. He didn't have one - he's "not a business man". Then I asked for the phone number for National. He yelled it out & then told me to go online to get it myself. I followed this up with a phone call to police. They were provided with a description & the direction he has heading. According to them, they have had complaints before about National rep's aggressive behaviour. They were going to send an officer out to have a chat with him. I know they are NOT affiliated with our local utility & will be calling to warn them about National's misrepresentation tomorrow so they can warn the public.

  35. National home services canvassing in Milton Ontario, beware. Very rude when I said no thanks, and that I had already asked for a no visit from their company previously. and to remove my name from the list again. He then stated, so you're not interested in your rebate? then started to justify why he showed up, that there are 9 offices and I said I don't really care why your company showed up again, then became really obnoxious and I shut the door.

Said he needed to come in to check my water heater, asked him if he was from Enbridge...he mumbled hid his tag and proceeded to walk through my front door! HeeHeeHee stopped cold in his tracks when my lovely pit bull started barking. He then told me to put my dog in the garage...I told him to get lost, and then the jerk asked if my husband was home! I said no but 911 is on speed dial and my security system is recording you.... nearly broke his neck with the freezing rain we had trying to get away.

  43. I used to work for National a couple years back, spent 6 months or so with the company on a working visa from the UK. I simply cannot believe that they are still sending people out door to door to get massacred by the public. It was already an extremely saturated market when i was working in 2010-2011, i can only imagine and feel for some of these guys (the honest ones) who are knocking on the same folks doors for the 11th and 12th time. The truth of the matter is that National is run by an extremely autocratic management (Larry Galbo - American) who put huge pressure on employees to make a sale (100% commission). The company brain washes you into thinking that you are doing good for society by switching out water heaters for a more energy efficient one. Believe me, they have some highly motivational speakers within the company who do a cracking job. In the companies defence they do not preach for you to lie at the door, to be rude or aggressive and to be fair, i saw a lot of 20 year old heaters in which there was no doubting the upgrade with National was beneficial. However in 90% of cases the i agree the upgrade is a waste of time due simply to the increase in the rental price. Regardless, I left the company after breaking free of this daft mentality. It was great sales experience but i look back now and cannot simply believe i did this job 6 days a week 10 hours a day in the freezing cold....amazing what you can put yourself through. What National are doing is not illegal, but it is unethical because of the ambiguity of the sales pitch. Unfortunately a proportion of aggressive uneducated numb sculls ruin this for the others. Not every National employee is a scam artist and i certainly did my best to sell the product in the correct manner. My advice is take a leaflet, read through the offering and if it makes sense to replace your water heater then do so.

I KNOW that he can hear me through the glass. I LIVE HERE. After I told him that I was not interested, and he insisted I open the door, I just walked away. At that point, he rang my doorbell AGAIN. So I got back to the window and showed him that I was calling the cops. He then LAUGHED at me like I was the crazy lady. I think it was the first time that Precious Snowflake was so-called rejected in his life. When he saw that I was serious about calling the cops, he slowly walked away.

  45. I work at national home services, I have been here for roughly half a year. I do apologize that all of you had a bad expierance with a misleading or high pressured represenative. I inform the home owners exactly what's going on and it's entirely their decision to have their water heater replaced or not. Let me point out a few things, no we are not a scam, no we are not affiliated with the local gas utility companies and rental water heater companies. It is absolutely not mandatory to let us in your house to check the water heater. Every company has andalways will have bad apples. google national home services and yes their are scam alerts but the majority of those claims are agents are presented as rude and or misleading. Unfortunate some homeowners had to experiance that. Google reliance home comfort scam, you will see complaints and scam alerts for reliance home comfort. Their is no scam between both companies just the misleading representatives. Union gas installed the water heaters in union territory and enbridge gas installed water heaters in enbridge territory. Reliance and direct energy bought these tanks as an investment. We national home services go door to door to find old reliance and direct energy tanks and upgrade them to newer tanks. A lot of home owners still have old water heaters that haven't been serviced.... So as long as you rent the equipment and is old enough the upgrade doesn't cost you anything. That's what we do.... Look for old outdated water heaters and schedule an appointment with you for the installation of a new water heater from national home services. We call you a day before if you still want to proceed or not. Their is no scam.... National has been doing this for 7 years and close to 300,000 water heaters have been replaced in that time span. Not all of you but a lot of you I'm sure you have received a call from reliance not to do business at the door and they have their own website called don't get burned at the door. Competition slandering... Reason why direct energy and reliance home comfort got sued for 15million and 10million dollers for bad business practices. You don't see McDonald's telling you don't eat from burger king... They would get sued like reliance and direct energy did. That lawsuit can be found under the competition bureau at the government website. Gc.ca I believe it is. It's all competition only and completely your choice to stick with your current supplier or not. People switch from bell, rogers etc because they find deals that meet their needs.... Same goes toward renting a water heater. I'm not bashing reliance in any way... As long as it's old enough it's upgradable to a new water heater from national home services, completely your choice lol. Again I apologize for anyone here that have had any bad experiances with our representatives.

  46. I just had a SECOND National rep come to my door. A year ago, I actually fell for it, and ended up signing an agreement with National. That is because the guy basically convinced me that it was a provincial mandate or something, and that I was required to get a different water heater. As soon as he left, I did a quick internet query, and called to cancel. Scam or not, that kind of aggressive door-to-door sales is unacceptable. Anyway, a new rep (with silent sidekick) came today. I saw the National logo and told him I wasn't interested. He asked why, and I told him about my experience. He asked what I had read on the internet, and I told him that I read that it was a scam and insisted that I wasn't going to get roped into some contract with them. I also said that if I want to upgrade something in my house, I'm quite capable of taking the initiative myself. I was surprised how unwilling to back down he was, even after I started to close the door on him twice. Finally, I said I was sorry to be rude, and said "have a nice day", and that got rid of them. Not cool. National sales techniques are deceptive and aggressive.

  52. They are in Windsor & their tactics have changed, today is the second time I've been harassed at the door from National Home Services about me needing a new hot water heater and both times the sales rep said she/he was from the Ontario Government & needed to do an inspection of my water tank. The first time they came in July the girl opened the door saying she "had" to do an inspection of my hot water tank to make sure it was "up to code" from the Government of Canada & pushed her way past me coming in on her own without me inviting her into my home she said my tank was 15 years old & didn't meet safety standards & it needed to be replaced, before I knew it she'd walked through my house saying she was looking for my thermostat saying it needed to be replaced too even though its a new energy efficient programmable thermostat. Then she said I also needed a new furnace & central air conditioning unit even though the central air unit was replaced three years ago. She proceeded to write up a contract & before I knew it pushed the paper to me & said to just sign there and give her a cheque to get the deal started, I backed away & told her I needed to discuss it with my spouse & headed to the door, she reluctantly followed saying to call her to come back then, of course I didn't. Today another person from National just came & said he was from the Ontario government & needed to inspect my water tank as a government precaution. He kept mentioning it was an Ontario government thing, now that is so misleading, he kept saying it was an inspection he HAD to do from the Government, but I told him I needed to discuss this with my spouse kept a firm hold on the door & to leave a brochure & I'd call him back, he did that & left. If my spouse had been here on their own, I know they'd have been scared into signing a contract. Don't want to upset the government they'd say. I have a bright red, "No Salespersons allowed" sign that is going on my door today, sent to me from Reliance my provider for 30 years!

  53. To back up what LukeNHS wrote above, this is my understanding of the situation:

I actually worked for NHS for a few months in 2010 to make some quick money while waiting for my real job to start. While most employees were unscrupulous, checkered scum with one day of training in hand; the pitch is far from a scam... Well, any scam that involves walking around by yourself in a Domino's Pizza replica uniform and an orange vest, in 35 degree heat/torrential thunderstorms holding a big metal clipboard, for 10 hours a day until you're picked up by the team van at 730pm; is probably the worst way I could imagine to cheat people out of their money.

There are bits and pieces of truth in the comments in the blog post, so I'll consolidate for anyone else getting these visits. If things haven't changed, this is actually a really good deal for anyone renting their gas-powered water heater/tank. When Ontario privatized natural gas, the rental contracts were purchased exclusively by an American firm. The contract has been passed around and is now held by Reliance Home Comfort, another American firm. The original sale occurred over a decade ago, so even if your house was built in 2000 with a brand new tank, that's a 13 year-old water heater that should be replaced or at least serviced/drained/cleaned every 10 years. Reliance (smartly) won't come to your house until you call them though, they would rather print money, so a lot of people don't even know how old and full of sediment their tank is until it cracks and floods their basement. (As a comparison, imagine renting the same modem from your Internet provider for the past 10 years, with no upgrades).

Well, the exclusivity rights on the original natural gas contract expired a few years, so a Canadian group (NHS) decided to offer "free upgrades" to Energy Star tanks in exchange for the rights to the same rental rate you're currently paying to the American firm. If NHS wasn't so cheap, they might spend the $30 for a newspaper or TV ad to explain this to prospective customers, instead of hiring "Team Juvi" to push the product/service.

    I hope this helps.

  54. I don't know what all the fuss is about to be honest. I had a National Home Services representative come to my home and clearly stated that they were a different company from both Direct Energy and Enbridge. To further solidify that statement I was asked on a recorded call with their head office if I understood they were a separate company after they explained all the benefits of joining their company. When I called Direct Energy they told me that National supplies less efficient water heaters than Direct so I did my research and it turns out that they both supply tanks from the SAME manufacturer! Not only was I lied to by the very people I paid my rental to for 10 years but they also admitted that they don't even provide the extra maintenance or home protection that National has to offer at relatively the same price as I was already paying to Direct Energy AND I still get billed by Enbridge just as I always have. To top it off National even paid me $100 for switching to their company. The bottom line is that regardless of who you rent with, they're going to find a way to make their money from you. At least if you're an informed customer you will be smart enough to know which is the better deal. I suppose if I were easily influenced by word of mouth and the opinions of others I would have looked to blogs like this for the answers instead of doing the proper research and finding factual information from credible sources. I have noticed a small savings on my gas bill since swapping heaters and my bills have not doubled or even increased by a fraction of what I was paying before. Do your research folks and be a smart consumer. http://www.competitionbureau.gc.ca/eic/site/cb-bc.nsf/eng/03520.html

When I spoke with him throught the screen door he apologized for knocking so hard and started his water heater chat. My husband stepped outside to listen to him and then politely said no we weren't interested. The guy then said he wanted to come in and see if we were eligable for this rebate ....it would only take thirty seconds. WHO in their right mind would let a stranger in their home at 8 p.m at night? WHO in their right mind would let a stranger in their home anyway? I fear for the elderly who might just be vulnerable enough to let these people into their homes and sign things that they shouldn't... When my husband told the guy no he couldn't come into our house the guy got angry and asked if he had done something wrong. At that point my husband walked into the house and closed the door.

Told him I wasn't interested and to leave my property immediately and to leave the area unless he wanted wait a few minutes so he could meet with the police. He started yelling and pacing back and forth in front of my house telling me that he made more money than I did (not sure what he was trying to say with that one). I took a pile of photos of the guy with my camera phone while he tried to hide his face and his "ID badge". (Kind of reminded me of what a cockroach does when you turn the lights on). He quickly scurried up the street while phoning for his "getaway" car - and a few minutes later it picked him up and they took off. The police are still driving around looking for him and have his picture. I don't care if these guys are "legit" insofar as the company they supposedly represent actually exists - I don't appreciate their approach. If this happens to you - and they don't quietly leave after your first refusal - call 911 and get the police. 62. Renting a water heater is the scam, not so much these companies. Don't be ignorant and do some research before coming to conclusions. Enbridge is the gas company and has NOTHING to do with your water heater. National Home Servies changes old rental tanks that have been neglected by direct energy and reliance, its simple business. They want the business so they change them free of cost and lock you into a 15 year contract...the scam. However if you are renting a 10-15 year old tank, companies like reliance obviously don't want to change it because it COSTS THEM MONEY, and will try and sell you against the fact...a SCAM. Bottomline, National Home Services decieves you with their sales tactics, but companies like DE and Reliance are as big a scam cause they'll leave an old disgusting water heater in your basement for as long as they can without replacing it.

    1. First off send them an email or written letter about your complaint and the run around. Give them a time period ( a few days3-5 business days) to contact you back. In the letter explain you have not been previously reached for responds. Also write you are invoking your rights under the consumer protection act that if they do not respond in due time you will contact the BBB, the Ministry of consumer services, and your lawyer. (even if you don't have a lawyer). If they do not respond do so. Make sure you take the time to look over your fine print and highlight any thing you don't understand. ie. the rental for the life of the water heater, and it passing on to your heirs if you should pass before hand. 64. This seems to be happening A LOT! I just had my doorbell ring with two guys trying to "check" my water heater! I have a sign on my doorbell saying "Do Not Ring", yet they rang anyway and woke up my child! If that wasn't bad enough, when I opened my window, instead of door to ask what they wanted, one guy said..."I'm not going to talk to you through the window" so I said, "well goodbye then" He proceeded to get angry so I said, I've just called the police so stick around at your own peril. What jerks - dark out, ringing bells and knocking on doors, disturbing what little time some families have to spend together and have the nerve to be rude when you decline their scam!

  65. Post from oct,6/013- you are very right on all your info except the fact that NHS is a scam. IT is much lower in costs to by a tank but if it breaks down you are screwed. NHS replaces your old one with a new one when you switch to a contract with them or take on one and will aswell replace it if breaks down. Aswell, as for any company there are ppl hired on withour knowing they will be rude and agressive to the customers, this is not the companys fault! Report these employees!

  67. I live in Stouffville, these guys came last night. The "official" and the trainee. I am very suspicious of people at my door, and very aggressive - as I hate them. I am new to Canada - I come from a crime ridden place of scams. BUT - these guys were so smooth that they got through my defenses. How? Clever & so simple, they "should I take my shoes off...." brilliant deflection. I have to say, these guys are genius at playing psychological games. Where I come from, a guy getting into the house usually ends badly - armed robbery, or intel for a breaking or home invasion the next day. So for me it is unbelievable that these guys got around me. I felt uncomfortable, but went along like a good lamb.

I feel so stupid and violated. Fortunately I have a 24hr rule that I do not sign - ever - until I have had time to check things out. Well, you only need to google National for a few seconds to get a picture.

Also my brother exploded into a string of abuse when I told him - amazingly I found my self defending these guys until I started to look at the whole scam - that's how convincing they are.

Very good National, very convincing and totally freaking evil.

Well, now I am prepped again, my old hatred and disgust have been reignited in Canada, so all I can say is God help the next bastard who comes calling.

  68. We just had our 9 year old Reliance HWH replaced by a new GSW Engergy efficient tank from NHS. A very polite young woman came to my door and asked if she could look at our HWH. We moved into the home 4 years ago and two months ago the heater was leaking. We called, and a washer was put on the tap but the appearance of the tank was what concerned National. It was pitted on the bottom and the top was beginning to rust. A new tank (more energy efficient) with inspections every 5 years was suggested. We decided it was time to make the change. The installers were very mannerly, efficient, and left the area clean, neat and tidy. Satisfied! Later that evening a young man from RELIANCE showed up at the door and began to run down NHS saying we were wrong to have had our tank replaced. HE WAS RELENTLESS AND ON TOP OF IT HAD A TERRIBLE SPEACH IMPEDIMENT SO WE COULDN'T UNDERSTAND HIM. After several minutes of agresive conversation we asked him to leave and he would not back down!!! We finally closed the door on him. End of.......NO!! He came back again the next day and I told him to go away, I didn't have anything to talk to him about. He started again to run down NHS and I asked him to leave and slammed the door in his face. Our monthly rental is exactly the same as it was with Reliance and we have a brand new (energy efficient tank) that will be inspected every 5 years. We don't feel we've been scammed but certainly very annoyed by RELIANCE!!!

I used to work there ya they don't take no for an answer and no there not a scam. companies can pay money to put up sites like this and get a bunch of anonymous People to post PROPAGANDA cigarette companies with chemical companies did it through the 70 till now with similar methods. That's fact they used fire fighters ass the tool to put a chemical in your furniture and most baby products that caused cancer. So do your research National has a warehouse in ajax there main office is at yonge and sheppard in Toronto that's the core of the city you need lots of money to open up down there plus there owned by a Canadian energy company called just energy they offer competitive rates and rate increase stability which the other guys don't and they offer preventive maintenance Which most of the other guys don't they came into the market because consumers were upset because there where only two companies and they had a monopoly on the game and where increasing rates and not properly servicing units think people think my name is Justin raposo I was fired because they have a zero tolerance for tardiness

I asked what he wanted but he mumbled and pointed to the side of my house and said he was only doing his job. I told him I wasn't interested and turned off the light. He wouldn't leave. I came back with my phone and yelled that I was going to call the police. They left. I called the non emergency police line. This was this evening. Why do they have to come around so late at night. They are in Markham now.

  72. A little crisis at hand up in Sault Ste Marie. My wife was contacted by phone by our provider (they said) which is Direct Energy. Our 20 gallon hot water heater was old and hazardous for the environment. They said they would install a 40 gallon tank at no cost. Coming to day between 12pm and 4pm.
I used a search engine for the number they gave if any questions. It appears to be National Home Services. I then got myself in a right old tizzy doing research. I then tried and tried to contact the number and will still do.
Somehow would like to head them off at the pass so to speak and avoid wasting their time. We kept having calls from some entity previously about water tank installation.
No way are we going to have any rental. Local stores sell a small water heater for about 400 dollars and up.
Hope for no confrontation as I am over eighty years old, wife over 75 years.

  73. Just got through to National Home Services.
Very polite man who attended to my problem. He said he would contact the sales reps and cancel their visit.
What I think has happened is that persons are employed to sell the idea of rental services and the unit. I have been unemployed my self many many moons ago and have empathy for people. Out of the need to make sales, this brings on questionable practices. As I said it was not Direct Energy, as they were contacted and said there was no work order for my address.
A legitimate business but I guess their reps cut a few corners.

I also asked that I would like to end my contract and guess what " its 1,150.00 dollars to remove the tank" omg what a scam. Do not sign with this company they are out to scam poor homeowners.

  75. A National rep was at my door in Kanata this Saturday, Feb. 8th. Very, very aggressive. I had to literally close my door as he was still arguing that he MUST see my hot water heater. A few minutes later, my young neighbour knocks at my door frightened... he had bullied his way in and was upstairs, while she fled downstairs not wanting to be alone with him. She is renting and didn't know what to do, since he told her that he HAD TO come in. I marched upstairs and in no uncertain terms asked him to leave. He was argumentative the whole way out. I seriously thought that I had placed the both of us in harm's way. I should have called the police.

In the London area: National Home Services just came to my door and said I was renting a water heater from them (not true) and that they needed to come in and check that the water pipes had the correct clearance around my water heater. They implied that they were representing my utility company or the city in making sure the water heater was up to building code. The young man spoke quickly, and could not produce a business card when I asked for one..he said, I work for National Home Services (and turned his card, which had been facing backwards (blank side out). I told him he was not coming in and shut the door. Contact the Ontario Energy Board.

  80. Waterloo - March 19, 2014, early afternoon.

A young man that looked like a mechanic showed up at my door saying that he is here to inspect and upgrade water heaters in the area. When I was skeptical and said that I was not interested, he said that "I am not selling anything", then he said "you are with Reliance, right ?". He said that he is replacing old, inefficient water heaters with new energy-efficient ones for free for Reliance customers - making it sound like he was from Reliance himself - or working for Reliance. This is what fooled me. I pointed out to him that I am surprised because I got a new tank just last year from Reliance and I was happy with it but he was adamant that I needed a new water heater with glass lining inside that doesn't attract metals from the city water. I was almost ready to schedule the replacement when he started complaining about how Reliance was acquired by an American company - this is when things started to get suspicious. After further questioning, he finally admitted that he is from "National", a "Canadian company". He said that this is great because all of its profits are staying in Canada rather than going to the U.S. and that he is trying to sign me up for their service, which supposedly costs less and includes a free new water heater. I expressed my disappointment that he was not upfront about his intentions at the door to sell me a service (he clearly said "I am not selling anything"). When I asked him to leave, he got aggravated and went on and on about not understanding why I would not sign up with National. As he left, he left a flyer with me, stormed out of the house slamming the door behind him.

I have just filed the above complaint with BBB under deceptive sales practices. I encourage others to do the same. BTW - thanks for the blog !

  81. From Cambridge:
We had a lovely young lady attend to our door representing National. We were told that National was taking over existing Reliance contracts and that they were there to replace our existing heater. Nobody had mentioned Reliance's name which made it sound legit. Boy were we stupid.
It was shortly after we had the heater replaced that we began getting calls from Reliance advising us that we may be getting double billed. We checked and sure enough we were. You would think that someone who was "taking over Reliance contracts" would cancel the old one. But we fell for it.

It was a few months after that a guy came to the door claiming to be from National wanting to check our heater to insure it was working properly. I was primed for the visit and told the guy in no uncertain terms that if there is an issue with the tank, they will be the first to hear about it. He was insistant until I opened the door and stepped on to the front porch. He thought better of it but went away cursing. I told him to advise others not to return. LESSON LEARNED..... Do NOT deal with door to door sales people. National is a scam.

  82. I love the anonymous follow-ups on this blog. In my personal opinion, they smack of someone representing said company desperately trying to prevent a social media backlash, and to me they hold no credibility.

I too have had these people come to my door. I found them very misleading and suspicious, and I chased them away. I do not know who they represented, and I don't much care. I can do my own research on water heaters without them coming to my door and disturbing me.

Had one at the door today trying to tell me the "No Sales" didn't mean him because he wasn't selling anything. Wouldn't you call that an outright lie? He wanted in my house to check my heater. I hope they see this and understand that if they can't respect my sign then there is no way in the world I would rent a heater from them. Next one gets to check out my water hose close up to see if it works.

  84. Today after lunch, on an Easter Monday afternoon, I was on the phone with my sister, I heard a knock on her door then I heard the entire conversation. Someone tried to force himself into my sister's house demanding to see her hot water tank, claiming that her water tank needs to be replaced right away. My sister politely said no as her house is only 2 years old. He would not leave. My sister asked which company sent him? he refused to answer but went on demanding to see the water tank. He raised his voice at my sister and her children, accusing my sister "you don't know anything about hot water tank, and I know everything about all hot water tanks, that's why I need to see your tank before replacing it". He refused to leave and started shouting so aggressively that made me extremely nervous and worried. As I was about to call the police, my sister finally managed to get the company's name out of him and pushed him out of the house.

A couple of years ago, while visiting my senior parents, a similar incident happened when I answered their door. Luckily I was there to stop the aggressive sales person from forcing herself into the house. Too bad she would not give me the company name.

This kind of business is so shady and aggressive. It is so wrong, just like the daily calls that I get for duct-cleaning services from same people who could barely speak English. Despite repeatedly asking them politely not to call back, they continue to do so. Recently, my senior parents even had valuables stolen by the duct-cleaning men.

These door to door sales people have crossed the ethics line with their rudeness and aggressive intimidation tactics. Can the government step up to protect innocent consumers and make these scummy aggressive sales tactics illegal?

  88. I just purchased and took possession of my home and the next day a tall older balding gentleman with glasses and an eastern European accent to my door asking about our water saying that he has to inspect it and immediately asked if he should take his shoes off.
He explained to me that water tanks get rust over time and causes skin issues, he then went on to tell me that a family of 3 was killed in their home due to carbon monoxide poisoning from the water heater (I later googled this and found nothing, indicating he was lying) so they are checking to ensure the water heaters are up to date, saying that mine is only mid-efficiency and that they will install a high efficiency tank for me for free and I would have to pay the same rent I was paying before with 3 months free.
He never told me what company he was from, also I didn't see any Identification. The whole thing went by so fast and when I researched after he left and found blogs like this, I cancelled everything. He then CAME BACK again the following day after I cancelled but we put another relative to tell him No.

  91. A guy from Reliance knocked on my door with a clip broad and pretended to be from Direct Energy. He started with mentioning that you're the new owner of the house. My HWH is from Direct Energy. He needs to inspect my HWH if it is safe. By the time I was processing this information. He started distraction by saying "Do I need to put my shoes off? . So my attention was diverted before I could process the first information. They are using all proven scientific social engineering skills with their script. They know brain cannot process 2 completely different information at a time.

I just moved into the house 2 days ago. So I thought DE got the information about the new owner and sent their inspector. So I let him in.

Once he is in the basement. He started telling me your HWH is 6 years old. It's rusted till the middle. You're bathing in the dirty water which will irritate your skin, your family is in danger etc and it needs to be replaced. Then he shows a bill and said you'll pay the same rate as before no extra charges for the upgrade to high efficiency HWH. He then pass me a contract paper to sign.

I was very happy to see DE is so much concerned for their customers and doing free upgrade.

But when he said "we will send your old HWH to DE so I don't have to worry about it". It caught my attention. I asked him where is he from? He said he is from Reliance. But sounded like as if he is authorized inspector from DE. I had no idea about other HWH provider like Reliance, National etc.

I told him he was deceptive about representing himself. Why he entered my house? His face went blank. He proceeded to the door immediately. He probably thought I was going to call the cop. I asked his name as he was leaving the door. He said George but no business card whatsoever. I asked him for brochure. He didn't have one. He left immediately in a Nissan Altima. He spoke English in French accent. He is in Brampton.

I'm still wondering how he got the info that I moved into this home 2 days ago and I'm a new owner.... big privacy issue... Any one has any info let know here..

  93. Wednesday, 17th December 2014.
    Newmarket, Ontario.

National Home Services paid a call this afternoon.

I have a "NO SOLICITING" sign on my door, provided by my home security company, but that did not stop NHS - one bulky man and his small silent male partner replete with clipboards and round-the-neck ID cards.

The "talker" insisted that the "NO SOLICITING" sticker on my door was provided to me by Reliance which he was suggesting that he was affiliated with in some way.

I pointed out that, in fact, the "NO SOLICITING" sticker was provided to me by my home security/alarm system company to discourage house-to-house marketing and scams.
He obviously did not get the "hint."

Then the usual spiel was forthcoming about why my water heater needed upgrading/replacing yada yada.
(Water heater was replaced in February 2013 by my regular company.)
Of course, I have heard all this rubbish before.

Then I asked the "talker" what my name was and he did not know.
Surely, if I was a customer, then he should have a record of my name!

He asked me what colour the water heater is.
I said that I had no intention of telling him.
(On hindsight, I should have told him that it was pink!)

I asked for his name, which he kindly provided - it was on his name tag anyway - a Mike Cartwright from National Home Services.
I asked for the company's 'phone number which he provided as 1-877-673-5373.
I told him I would call my own water heater company and verify that he and NHS was performing an authorised house call and was not a scam.

Then I got the rolling eyes type look between the two of them standing there.

I thanked him for the call, and said I would get back to them at the 1-877 number just as soon as I had confirmation from my own service company that this was all "above board" as it were.

I called my own service company and was informed that NHS have been doing this soliciting for years.
That just confirmed exactly what I already knew.

I then did a search on NHS and came upon this very informative 'blog.
    Thank you.
